My name is Kristian, I am a 29 year old engineer from Oslo, Norway, and I will use this blog to present some ideas revolving around climate change and the emerging ecological catastrophe, peak oil, and general observations of society.
The name Philantropic Misanthrope derives from the fact that I find a lot of what homo sapiens does to its fellow human beings as well as the ecological systems we are completely dependent on to be stupid beyond words. What we're currently doing is so unwise that I don't know whether to weep or laugh. But at the same time, I'm not your common misanthrope. I certainly don't hate people or want people to die or suffer. On the contrary, I find the people surrounding me to be the best life has to offer.
Thus, it is possible to be both philantropical and misanthropical at the same time. Like yin and yang in taoism, what goes too far in one direction emerges at the beginning of the other. We have to treat human beings and organisations comprised of human beings with respect, but also with caution. The combined effects of group think and cognitive dissonance makes us capable of
bottomless stupidity, and this has to be countered by thinking and expressing one self against the current of conventional wisdom.
This blog will partly build on my previous blog with the same name, located at www.thelifeforum.com/philmis, and I will use some of what I wrote there in this blog.
